Super vs. Natural

It seems to be a phenomenon exclusive to the Fifth:  the dichotomy between what is perceived as "normal" and that which exceeds it.  There are always exceptional beings -- of every world, age, and Race -- but in the Fifth there appear those who are simply extraordinary.

Super

In Earth's Modern Epoch, gifted individuals are most often grouped together under the heading Supers.  Whether such awesome prowess is due to minimally understood genetic quirks, a melding with machinery, or extraterrestrial origins, beings whose capabilities exceed human limits are regarded with a mixture of fear and awe.  Naturals seem to be divided in a sort of inverted bell curve with the vast majority either wholly despising or nearly worshipping Supers.

For their part, the largest portion of Supers seem to be respectful of their own capabilities.  While they may not be altruistic do-gooders, they are also not bent on destruction.  Even with enough strength to juggle mountains, one must keep the lights on and the pantry stocked.  It usually never occurs to most Naturals that Supers are simply people, just trying to get by.  It is very rare for a Super to display the sort of power that could alter the course of history.  Most Supers leverage their gifts to advance a career.  A construction worker with incredible strength and limitless stamina, for instance, makes for a very valuable employee.

For the Super, however, life is often quite dramatic.  Very powerful forces both public and private seek to influence the gifted or simply control them outright.  The more potent the gifts, the more a Super is pursued.  Each individual Super must, of course, choose to embrace such an existence -- often to the exclusion of all else -- or shun it.  An entire life lived under the scrutiny of a world is no easy thing and a great many Supers inexplicably vanish, presumably to escape into a more peaceful state of being.  Very few such individuals ever return.

Natural

A being that exists within the limits imposed by heritage is often referred to as a Natural.  This is not to say that handicaps may not be overcome or that the use of technology to exceed Natural limitations brands one a Super.  It is the essence of a thing that determines predjudice.  To see the moon through a telescope or wear a bullet-proof vest are temporary solutions to permanent "problems."  Neither the vest nor the optical device are a part of the user and so the user remains, as some might say, "only human."

To live a life of the storied quiet desperation in a land where wonders walk down the street is a feat that rivals the most prodigious displays of superpowers.  To know that, perhaps, if one's genetic code differed by the smallest fraction that this one, too, could dance amongst the clouds and see forever and still be able to dream and hope and live is one of the greatest miracles of worlds so blessed (cursed?) by the presence of the everyday incredible.

Some lose hope, turning disappointment into despair, and lash out at the world with a sort of holy fervor.  Anti-Super sentiments, often targeting Avatars, is born this way.  Thankfully, twisted jealousy of this sort is almost as rare a trait as an inborn ability to fly without wings.  Amongst Mortals, there is a nigh-infinite abundance of variety.

For every Super there are hundreds of thousands of Naturals.  Business persons, politicians, doctors, artists and teachers, these individuals make a world what it is.  What some might see as set dressing, another might see the only stories worth telling.
